OPAT Reaches Milestone, 100,000 bed days saved!
During February 2017 the national Out-Patient Antimicrobial Programme (OPAT) reached a significant milestone; the service, which had been expanded in January 2013, reached the figure of “100,000 bed days saved”.
For patients requiring IV antibiotics and for hard-pressed healthcare resources there are clear advantages to home management of patients. At any one time in Irish hospitals it is estimated that 500 patients could be receiving their IV antibiotics at home. Home administration allows early discharge, frees up hospital beds, avoids hospital acquired infections, enables effective antibiotic stewardship while reducing hospital medical and nursing staff workload.
